A community-led COVID-19 response to Development Finance
About the Initiative
“A community-led Covid-19 response to development Finance” by Derecho, Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (DAR) to coordinate a collective effort of civil society groups from around the world to alleviate the effects that Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), governments, and other actors have on the ever-changing landscape of vulnerable communities. The joint effort will accompany those vulnerable communities that are addressing the current COVID-19 crisis by holding decision-makers accountable and enhancing active participation of communities in recovery packages negotiations.
Why is now the time to act?
“We need to act now to ensure that affected communities that haven’t received DFI and/or government aid have adequate medical supplies to face the pandemic. It is crucial that DFIs put in place the safeguards that they promised to protect indigenous communities. If communications between DFIs and communities do not exist, then funded projects may encroach upon and violate the rights of these communities.”
What is your vision of change for the global economy with this initiative?
Through our initiative, we envision a global stage where DFI’s environmental and social safeguard policies are transparent and comply with international human rights standards.
How do you plan to leverage RVF support?
The RVF is supporting efforts to build a network of civil society partners that can help each other build a more sustainable future.
