Protecting garment workers

Remake

This project addresses the long-term impact on garment workers of the economic fall-out from the global pandemic. Remake documents the ongoing impacts of the pandemic on workers’ health and livelihoods. It pushes brands to honor their contracts and to pay garment workers’ wages. The project also strives to protect workers from COVID-19 and to ensure access to health care. With factories opening up around the world and infection rates on the rise, Remake will keep garment workers’ needs before the press, brands and public actors. Remake will also push for systemic change through more equitable contracts between brands and factories, and greater transparency around purchasing practice.

Why is now the time to act?

“Garment workers are on the brink of starvation and time is of the essence with the fall forecast showing upwards of 30% retail contraction. Garment workers are increasingly vulnerable due to job losses, a rise in COVID-19 infection rates and limited access to health care or severance payments. Remake's "Pay Up" work is vital to hold brands accountable for their cancelled orders, secure wage payments and apply leverage to unlock funds from public institutions.”
