Domestic workers building strength
International Domestic Workers Federation
IDWF will work to strengthen the strategies used by its affiliates to respond to the immediate needs of domestic workers who face increased insecurity caused by the health and economic crises. This project seeks recognition of domestic work as formal employment—closing the social protection and gender gaps of domestic workers, and allowing them to benefit from labour and social protections, COVID-19 support and stimulus packages, and economic recovery programs.
Why is now the time to act?
“Stymied by low salaries and a lack of recognition regarding their contribution to the economy, domestic workers often face marginalization and discrimination. They are at risk of COVID-19 infection due to a lack of protective equipment and accurate preventive information. In addition, domestic workers' groups or trade unions cannot sustain their organizations due to declining memberships and lack of leadership support.”
