Monitoring the COVID-19/mining nexus
MiningWatch Canada
The Global Allies Monitoring Group exposes how the mining industry, with the support of governments and other powerful actors, is taking advantage of COVID-19 to enhance conditions for its future expansion. This project, led by MiningWatch Canada, will facilitate action at the local, national and international levels to support local struggles that challenge pro-mining measures. Healthy and resilient communities and workers are better able to contribute to the development of sustainable and equitable economies.
Why is now the time to act?
“Left unchecked, the mining and extractive sector’s dominance over economic policy will deepen—precisely at a time when it should be curtailed in order to address the crises of climate, biodiversity and global inequality. Mining communities working to build sustainable futures will suffer increased repression and marginalization in the face of mining interests, while those with limited options—such as mineworkers or mine-affected communities—will continue to suffer disproportionately from the pandemic and its economic fall-out.”
