Promoting a green, just recovery in Latin America
Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense
This project will establish a climate justice campaign in Latin America, uniting movements that advocate for a just recovery centered in human rights, gender equity, social welfare and democracy. The project promotes commitments from Latin American governments to reduce emissions from oil, gas and coal extraction and use. It seeks to block the expansion of coal mining in Colombia and Mexico, and to reinstate a moratorium on fracking that was lifted by the Colombian government in the name of economic recovery and as a source of cheap energy.
Why is now the time to act?
“Latin American governments and industries are pushing for economic recovery based on business as usual. They’re focused on resource extraction and megaprojects that destroy the natural environment and that harm the communities best placed to protect nature, instead of investing in renewable and just solutions.”
