Securing climate action in the global pandemic

Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development

The international community faces multiple crises—the Covid-19 pandemic, an economic recession and the climate emergency. The call to scale up and deliver climate finance is being overshadowed by demands for a response to Covid-19 and its economic fallout. This project seeks to buttress demands from the Global South for climate finance, a need as urgent as those associated with Covid-19. The project involves advocacy work to ensure that governments scale up their commitments and deliver climate finance alongside COVID relief. In addition, it promotes complementarity between programs and policies on climate finance and COVID relief.

Why is now the time to act?

“Climate finance is required to drive the shift from fossil fuels towards renewable energy in the Global South. This transition will support efforts to keep the global average temperature from rising beyond 1.5 degrees. Adaptation to climate impacts will also be less difficult when sustainable livelihoods and green jobs are in place. This project seeks to put planet over profit, prioritizing people’s rights.”
