Challenging private creditors
Christian Aid / icefi / tjna
This project promotes accountability mechanisms for private creditors. The initiative involves research in four countries that make significant debt payments to private creditors (Kenya, Nigeria, Guatemala and El Salvador). Research findings will be used to raise awareness regarding the failures of the current international debt system, particularly with respect to private creditors, and will support advocacy efforts to create an independent sovereign debt workout mechanism.
Why it matters
The influence of private creditors on sovereign debt is increasingly significant. However, there is a persistent lack of transparency and accountability regarding the operations of these financial actors. Civil society efforts to expose and address these gaps will strengthen the global debt justice movement, buttressing advocacy efforts in countries with high levels of private creditor debt.
